Born in 1962 in Kaifeng, Henan, is a Chinese ceramic artist based in the United States. He is a pioneer in the inheritance, development, and innovation of contemporary Northern Song Guan Ware (Official Ware) culture and art.

Professional Background & Technical Mastery

In the early 1990s, Yu began his career at the Kaifeng Northern Song Guan Ware Research Institute, where he dedicated himself to the research and firing of this historic ceramic style. He systematically studied ceramic kiln thermal engineering and the traditional celadon firing techniques of the Song Dynasty. He mastered core technologies including material formulation, clay body shaping, glazing, and firing for Guan, Jun, and Ge wares. Furthermore, he was instrumental in the R&D of all major scientific projects at the institute during that era.

Academic Contributions

Yu Letu is the only contemporary ceramic artist to have published specialized academic monographs on Guan Ware from both the Northern and Southern Song Dynasties, transforming the craft into a field of rigorous academic study:

• 2010: Published China's Bianjing Guan Kiln, the first academic monograph on the subject since Emperor Huizong created Song Guan Ware.

• 2018: Published Northern Song Guan Ware of China.

• Forthcoming: The Firing Techniques of Chinese Northern Song Guan Ware, a practice-based "textbook" completed in 2017, to be published by Elephant Press.

Artistic Achievements

His works have been featured in world-renowned exhibitions such as the Shanghai World Expo and Artexpo New York. He holds the record for the most international exhibition participations among Kaifeng ceramic artists and has received numerous prestigious awards.

Craftsmanship & Innovation

Yu is renowned for his "craftsman’s heart," meticulously overseeing every stage from material selection to the final firing. He is a specialist in kiln-transformation (Yaobian) effects using natural mineral glazes. He possesses a profound understanding of the physical and chemical properties of raw minerals at high temperatures, achieving a masterful level of control over both oxidative and reductive firing atmospheres to determine the final glaze color and texture.
